Perhaps, this is the most beautiful and rare map made by Abraham Ortelius - the most prominent medieval cartographer. This map depicts the Holy Land and the part of Egypt with the scheme of patriarch Abraham's travels. The map is decorated with 22 engraved insertions depicting the scenes from the Old Testament - the episodes connected with the life and travels of Abraham and his closest ones. On the top of the map there is an elaborate vignette with the explication. |

This is an excellent interpretation of one of the most popular topics in medieval cartography - the map of Holy Land, a part of Egypt and Red Sea. The map contains the most detailed scheme of the 40-years' wandering of the Hebrews after the Exodus (each year is described). At the top and at the bottom the map is decorated with 18 scenes from the Old Testament. Among these one can see a view of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, with Jesus Christ entering the city. |

In 1590 Petrus Plancius, a Dutch theologian and cartographer, has published the famous Bible, which was later called "Plancius Bible". The Bible was printed in Amsterdam by Lorenz Jacobson. This publication was accompanied by the series of the historical maps of the Holy Land. Each of these maps was decorated with 15 magnificent engravings depicting different stories from Bible. These maps are the best example of this genre in the history of book-printing. First map of the series depicts the scenes from Genesis and includes the small map where the assumed destination of Paradise is shown. |
